The Bastard Executioner, the new series from Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, has gotten a full season order from FX.

Set in the late Middle Ages, The Bastard Executioner stars newcomer Lee Jones, True Blood’s Stephen Moyer and Sons of Anarchy’s Katey Sagal (who’s also Sutter’s wife). FX has ordered a 10-episode season of the period drama, which now has an official synopsis.

“A period drama, The Bastard Executioner tells the story of a warrior knight in King Edward I’s charge who is broken by the ravages of war and vows to lay down his sword. But when that violence finds him again he is forced to pick up the bloodiest sword of all.”

Along with Jones, Moyer and Sagel, other series regulars for The Bastard Executioner include Flora Spencer-Longhurst, Sam Spruell, Darren Evans, Danny Sapani, Timothy V. Murphy, Sarah White, Sarah Sweeney, Elen Rhys and Ethan Griffiths. Sutter will appear in the series and also serve as executive producer with Brian Grazer, Francie Calfo and Paris Barclay.

“I love history. I love theology. I love blood,” said Sutter in a statement. “It’s been very satisfying weaving fact and fiction to create a new mythology that combines all these elements.”

The pilot for The Bastard Executioner — written by Sutter and helmed by Barclay — was shot in Wales recently, and production on the period drama will continue this summer there. FX plans to start airing the show in the fall.
