Admit it, you always wanted to play the role of a dynamic young girl in a video game. No? Well, no matter. If you like games with lots of adventures, shooting, and action this game is for you. Lindsi Luna Blast is a homebrew title for the GBA that plays homage to the old school games that just requires that you go around figuring out how to escape while shooting almost anything in sight. Lindsi’s friend, Nana, gives Lindsi a choice of missions on the menus screen and then debrief’s her on what needs to be done. After the debriefing you are thrown into the adventure and you just need to survive. In each world you visit you will face enemies of different types, ranging from secret agents to zombies. As you move about, it is important to try out any doors you find as you may find bonus objects or folks willing to help you out. Contact with any enemy does not kill you but it does drain your energy. If you run out of energy, the game’s over. So, how do you defend yourself? Lindsi has a gun to shoot whatever she faces. The catch is that you can only shoot while you are standing still. This requires strategy as enemies may be approaching from either side and they can be shooting stuff at you as well. You can crouch while shooting which will save you from getting hit by enemy fire but not from having enemies reach you and drain your energy. And remember that all enemies require two hits to die! Lindsi Luna Blast is certainly a fun game, with bright and colorful graphics, and excellent music. It truly shines as a homebrew title.

Megatroid

Looking for a futuristic puzzle adventure game? Look no further as Megatroid fits that bill. In Megatroid you take control of a robot (or megatroid) who is trapped in various mazes where he must complete different assignments within a given time period if he’s to move to the next maze. The megatroid comes equipped with the ability to shoot as well as to transport (or warp) itself through space & time within the mazes. In fact, the challenge of the game is finding the best way to jump within the maze to complete each task in the allotted time. The task may be as “simple” as finding the exit or it may involve destroying enemies within any given maze. Whatever the task may be is given to you at the beginning of each maze. The game ends if you lose all lives or if you run out of time. Megatroid has nice graphics. The megatroid itself is rendered well and the warp effect is a cool distortion of the entire screen until the megatroid reappears in the next part of the maze. You have to figure out the best spots to warp from within each maze if you want to complete your task and you may even have to both jump and warp at the same time in order to get to where you need. Sound is also pretty good with a catchy tune playing through the game that has a very techno style. Megatroid is freely available, so definitely feel free to give it a try. It’ll have you coming back for more.

Motocross Challenge

Grab your bike and get ready to have some fun! Motocross Challenge is a 2D side scrolling motorcycle racing game where you must control your bike on different terrains to complete jumps and avoid obstacles. The goal is to complete each track in the least amount of time while surviving each environment. As the player progresses in the game, additional bikes are unlocked as well as additional tracks to compete in. The ultimate goal is to win the MXC Championship. Motocross Challenge has been programmed to offer pretty sophisticated physics, setting it apart from other games of its kind. It also offers two modes of play: Challenge and Free Style. Within within Challenge Mode you get three choices: Beat the Clock, World Tour, and Trick Attack. Beat the Clock behaves more like your typical arcade racing game where the player must cross checkpoints in a specified time limit. World Tour adds three other “players,” all of whom are computer controlled, to make things more hectic. In this mode, the idea is to beat your opponents to be the best. Trick Attack is more of a free style mode to play out all your stunts. This is a game with plenty of options and variations (including the selection of additional bikes) to keep any player coming back for some time. Visually the game is beautifully done. The backgrounds are colorful, varied, and detailed. Control works very well and learning how to properly drive the bike is fun given the sophisticated physics. Sound and music are also excellent and really complete the experience. Motocross Challenge is a superb title for the GBA and a must-have for your library.

Nebulus

By Foxy

Originally developed by John M. Phillips for Commodore 64, Spectrum, Amiga and Atari ST computers, Nebulus was published in 1988 by Hewson. The game was ported to a number of systems (sometime with the name Tower Toppler) but it was never officially ported to the GBA. This oversight was corrected by Foxy in 2004 with the conversion of the Atari ST version to the system. Interestingly, while the graphics and game logic come from the ST version, the game sounds come from the Amiga version. The story of the game is set on the planet Nebulus, where someone has built giant towers in the sea without permission. Destructo Inc., a demolition company on Nebulus has been hired to destroy these towers and they’ve sent one of their experts to complete the task. As the player, you assume the role of this expert, a fat little green biped who is able to jump and shoot energy bubbles. To destroy a tower, the player must reach the top of the tower in a timely manner using the stairs, tunnels and elevators on each tower. Things are not so easy, though, as there are various traps and enemies protecting the towers who try to prevent the player’s progress by pushing your little fat character into the sea. Destroy the tower and you then travel underwater to the next tower in a bonus round where you need to capture shrimp-like creatures. Nebulus is a fun game and this conversion is just superb. Colorful graphics, nice sound effects and fun gameplay make this a winner. Go to Foxy’s web site to download the free ROM: http://www.foxysofts.com/?l=content/gba/nebulus.inc
