7th Guest - Virgin

7th Guest was one of the first ever games to use CD-ROM as a storage medium and with sales of over 2 million on the PC it was widely regarded as the killer app needed to get people to make the switch from floppy disks. It originally came out in 1993 with the Philips CD-I version close behind. I can't personally compare this version to the PC original but from what I have heard its far more impressive graphically than the home computer effort and was one of the first CD-i games to really impress people. You need the digital video cartridge to play this fine adventure game and you will see why when you get a look of the super smooth and highly impressive rendered graphics mixed with FMV. Everything about this game oozes class, its one of those games where you even find yourself looking at stuff just because it looks good! Explore the mansion, solve puzzles, listen to the spirits talk and try not to get too scared! If you like these big adventures games then you will love this and if you don't its still worth owning but the only bad thing is that I can't imagine the game having much replay value once you are done with it.

Dark Castle - Silicon Beach Software

This game to this day remains famous for one very big thing, it was voted the worst Megadrive (Genesis) game of all time by the legendary UK multi-format console magazine Mean Machines! So as you can imagine I approached this game with a certain refrain, having not played the MD version (at the time of writing) I was hoping this version may be different. It is actually based on a highly acclaimed (at the time) Apple II game that was later converted to the PC and was actually designed to be played with a mouse. I can’t imagine mouse control in a game like this worked very well so I assumed joypad control would be a massive improvement. I was wrong, very wrong indeed as this game is pretty much unplayable. Dark Castle really is a horrible piece of garbage; it reminds me of an awful budget ST game with horrid almost Commodore 64 like visuals, jerky animation and even worse collision detection. Its only redeeming feature is that the sound is ok. It tries to be some sort of Castlevania like game and fails on every single level. It makes me sick even talking about this trash. Avoid like the plague, easily the CD-i's worst game.

Mystic Midway: The Phantom Express - Philips Interactive

After the incredibly mediocre Mystic Midway: Rest In Pieces I was not exactly excited about playing its sequel. The start wasn't too good when I was presented by the same annoying music and irritating FMV host as the first game in the series. The game is supposedly, according to the fat old man, a journey through your life starting from child hood. In reality it’s a crap plot for a very dull game. You ride life's roller coaster (cheesy yes, I did try to tell you!) and, as you do, objects from your life fly towards you. So on the first level its baby bottles, dummies and nappies etc. You must then shoot these objects before they fly past you. Like the first game you must reach a set points total in order to progress. The next level is just the same only with different objects and a higher points total to reach. Pretty boring, pretty pointless and pretty crap.

Mystic Midway: Rest In Pieces - Philips Interactive

What an utter waste of CD game this is. Best way I can describe this is a flash game with some annoying FMV. Its basically just a shooting gallery game not unlike the classic Sega arcade game Carnival, that also appeared on the 2600 among other systems. You have a gun at the bottom of the screen and shoot targets, with a horror-based theme, that move across the screen on 4 levels. The top 3 levels vary in speed and the bottom one has gravestones on it that block your shots, as the levels go on these get in the way more and more. All you need to do is hit the specified score to get to the next level, the targets also change from level to level and later you get ones that move all over the screen. Some fat annoying idiot presents the whole thing and makes stupid comments when you die or get to another level. I really wish you could shoot him! A totally uninspiring affair that just left me thinking is that it?
